Today was a shorter walk, only about 7 miles, that was a nice break for our feet, and allowed us more time to look around Hereford. We poked around Fownhope in the morning after setting off, glad that it was a cooler and overcast day. We saw the 200 year old stocks that they locked people in for punishment in those days, and we looked around in the town church. Then, climbing 1/2 mile up the hill from the village, we found our path again.
We heard in Fownhope that the queen would be in Hereford today, but we probably misunderstood, because it was actually the Olympic torch that was to be in Hereford. Once we came into Hereford, we saw a mother pushing a baby carriage (pram) adorned with a few union jack flags, she told us the the torch event was already over and gone. England is making the most of the Olympic torch path, with live coverage; it seems that there are 8000 different torch bearers along the meandering path towards London, that means 8000 different torch bearers. Some of these people have started to sell the used torches on eBay. There are a lot of people hurting economically in the UK.
We have walked 52 miles along the trail in these first 5 days, and the river Wye is getting smaller and shallower being perhaps now 40 meters wide or so.
