We continue to have accommodations that have no internet access despite what they say, at least our laptop and iPad do not work at half of our locations... I do not know why. So we are posting for 2 days today from our stay in Hereford, the capital of Herefordshire, if indeed there is such a thing as a capital of a shire.
The walk from Ross on Wye to Fownhope was again on a warm sunny day, the locals are so happy under these conditions because they have had a tough winter and wet spring, with hail falling just before we arrived in the UK. The warm weather is great for photos and ambiance, the one downside is the heaviness of hiking when it's so warm, making our feet a bit sore. But this is normal and happens every time we do a long walk day after day. In a few days, our feet will be seasoned to the miles. Today, our total miles on the trail is 10.5, but we had another mile to get down to our destination, Fownhope, which is off the trail.
The start of the walk was right along the banks of the river Wye, in the budding plants, animals, and insects that have burst forth. This part of the walk was away from roads and very quiet and peaceful, at one point, we heard the call of the cuckoo bird, sounding just like the clock that took the name of the bird. As we climbed away from the river in the sunny humidity of midday, we came into a heard of bulls. They were standing in the middle of the field and seemed mostly unconcerned about us, but we kept to the side of the field just in case.
The last third of the hike had all the climbing, and we slowed down in the conditions, finding at least that the many trail turns were very well marked.
